Mulgrew Praises Thompson's Education Speech

From the DN's Daily Politics blog:

Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, approves of the speech. He says "Whether it is expanding the Community Schools model so more schools provide students the support they need to succeed, or front-loading services to children age five and under so they are ready to learn once they get to school, Bill Thompson is focused on getting kids what they need to achieve - in school and in life."

The Daily News also reports a school system under a Mayor Thompson "would feature increased communication with parents, longer school days and years and an expanded pre-kindergarten system."

That's swell about the expanded pre-K and communication with parents.

Not so swell having a longer school day and year.

Is Mulgrew supporting the expanded school day and school year as well?

I know this is not going to go over well in my school if that's the case.

Both students and teachers are burnt from the reform juggernaut.

If they want to add time after the school day for other activities unrelated to test prep, that's great.

Any other proposal for extra time and days is unacceptable.
